Post 29: Nuclear

We woke up at 4:30 today to drive 3 and half hours, and although that doesn't sound necessarily pleasant by itself, we got to visit a nuclear power plant today so it was completely worth it!

We arrived at an information center first where we were given coffee and a presentation on how the nuclear power plant runs and is maintained. I found their environmental testing and maintenance pretty interesting although I am still hesitant about the use of nuclear power just because of the waste it creates. I don't think that nuclear is as dangerous as many people believe it to be, at least not anymore. But I still don't like the fact that the reactors create waste that they are simply containing and then storing on site. I came out of the presentation with the opinion that nuclear is better than fossil fuels but I definitely think that wind, solar and hydroelectric power are cleaner sources of energy because they have no byproducts.

Nevertheless, I loved being able to walk through the plant. We were given hard hats and earplugs, and then we followed our tour guide inside the facility. We saw the control room and a huge room where the generators are kept and run. We were not allowed to take any pictures while we were there but It was pretty cool. A lot of us were geeking out.

We got lunch on site and then we got to visit the simulation center where they have a replica control room. People training to work in the control room practice in the simulation center so that they can prepare for any kind of situation, especially emergencies.

And also here's a picture of a cat that we found in a gas station because cats are adorable and you can never have too many pictures of them.
