Post 28: Rio!

AH today was so nice!!

We started the day off with a boat tour of Rio. For 2 hours, we got to sit on a boat and just take in the wonderful view of the skyline. We saw Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf for the first time in daylight which was spectacular.

I sat in one place for the majority of the trip, and I didn't talk to anyone for the most part. I spent these two hours just sitting there looking out of the water and relaxing with the wind in my face and it was amazing. It was pretty foggy out, but it was a perfect temperature and the clouds covering the hills on the coast were so cool to watch. You could see the clouds move and cover different areas and then reveal other parts. Every now and then Christ the Redeemer would disappear and then reappear. I really loved watching the birds that would fly right over the water near our boat. They would swoop down right next to us and fly in packs. We listened to Bosa Nova music throughout the whole trip, which is a traditional Brazilian genre similar to jazz. Its so relaxing and I'm definitely going to listen to more of it when I'm home. Once I had enough introspection time, I eventually got up, started talking to people, and I took a lot of photos. This boat ride was one of my favorite things we've done on the trip.

After this, we stopped back at the hostel quickly to change, and then we headed to Copacabana beach! We grabbed lunch first at this awesome sandwich and acai shop (where i spilled an entire glass of juice on Fatemah ahh.. sorry Fatemah), and then we spent the next 3 or 4 hours on the beach.
It was awesome. Although it was kind of cloudy, the air was warm enough to enjoy ourselves, and the water was even warmer. I jumped right in.

I didn't realize how beautiful Rio would be. When I first signed up for this trip, I kind of expected Rio to be very touristy and I didn't expect it to be my favorite city. But while it is touristy in some areas, I've been pleasantly surprised with just how colorful and lively everything is. There's so much green throughout the city, and I didn't know that there is actually a forest in the center of the city, which is super cool. I'm looking forward to Saturday when we will get to see Christ the Redeemer and Suglarloaf up close. I'm already dreading having to say goodbye to this city, but I'm glad I've gotten to experience it and we still have a few days to go.
